Robinson Elementary School opened in 1988, serving grades three through five. In 1998, Robinson Elementary merged with Dawson County Primary School, which opened in 1985. RES became a K-5 school.
Robinson Elementary School was named for Dr. Herbert W. Robinson. Dr. Robinson was born Christmas Day, 1916 to Charles I. Robinson and Lizzie Taylor Robinson. He was the youngest of eight children. He was educated in the Dawson County school system graduating from Dawsonville High School in 1933. Dr. Robinson married the former Miss Blanche Grogan on June 5, 1938. They have been blessed with two sons. Daryl, the oldest, is a lawyer and serves as the Chief Council for the State Attorney General. Rodney owns a manufacturing company.
Dr. Robinson worked at home during his high school years cutting wood. His educational experiences ranged from Amicalola School, a one room school, to principal of Dawson County High School, to Dean of Students at Gainesville College in Oakwood.
Dr. Robinson retired when he was 62, but continues to work with area schools and teaches Sunday School at the First Baptist of Dawsonville. He is actively involved in several civic organizations. He and Mrs. Robinson spend a lot of time at church, going to ball games, and keeping up with politics.
The Dawson County School System recognized Dr. Robinson's contributions to Dawson County when they named the Herbert W. Robinson Elementary School in his honor. In accepting the honor, Dr. Robinson said it was humbling and satisfying. He is very proud of Robinson Elementary and constantly follows its progress.
Dr. Robinson ranks as one of the most outstanding persons to come out of Dawson County. "His love for education and his desire to help others has made him a role model for thousands of students in all aspects of the educational field" stated Nicky Gilleland, principal at Robinson Elementary.
When addressing one of the classes at Robinson Elementary Dr. Robinson wrote, and this applies to all students, "the future is bright because of you. With you, Dawson County is a winner; indeed, the entire world is a winner!"
Special thanks to Charles Finley for this information about Dr. Robinson.
